The above picture is a typical pocket gopher mound. This horseshoe tunnel system is home to one pocket gopher. Each mound represents another "room" in the burrow system. One is to store food, one is a nursery, one is for sleeping ETC. Each room is for a different purpose. If these large mounds should appear in your yard call Expert Wildlife Solutions TODAY!

Pocket gophers in Florida need well-drained soils since they spend much of their lives in underground burrows. The burrows may be dug in roadsides, fields, and the most common are golf courses or lawns. Their burrow systems are usually within three feet of the ground’s surface. So what is a pocket gophers diet? They are classified as herbivores and they feed mainly on roots and bulbs. They are also known to consume the roots of shrubs and small trees and the leaves of plants, leaving behind disastrous results for your landscaping. Breeding takes place from January through spring. Pocket gophers have one litter each year with an average of three to four young per litter. The young gophers are cared for by the female, and they are weaned by five to six weeks of age. After a few more weeks the young disperse to dig their own burrow systems.

In the picture above, a pocket gopher is expelling dirt from the mound excavation. Pocket gophers chew the soil with their large teeth and fill furry pockets outside of their mouths. They then go to the surface and "spit" the dirt out causing the large piles of dirt around your yard.
